I have decided to start writing a weekly series simply titled "The deGrom Weekly Update". This will strictly be on New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom and his historic season so far. Each post will include results of his previous outings, his current stat line, who he faces in the given week, and my predictions of how he will perform. I do not know how I have not thought of this idea before, but I want to be able to remember his historic season in some way. This is something that has to be typed out, so I am going to make it happen!
All stats are through June 26th games

Current Jake News: The Great deGrom had a dominant start against the Braves last Monday, but issued a walk to the pitcher, Kyle Mueller. He looked like he could not control his slider during the at-bat against the Atlanta pitcher, but the main key was that he came away with the win and did not have to be pulled early because of an injury. The funniest thing of the outing was when the umpire checked him for foreign substances. deGrom took off his hat, showing his matted down hair which did not move when a breeze of the Flushing air kicked up and also took of his legendary Rawlings black leather glove with his name in orange stitching on the side. The umpire checked his hat and glove and gave it back to Jake. When walking back to the dugout, Tomas Nido, the Mets catcher gave deGrom a glove-five, instead of a high-five. News Flash, Mr. deGrom does not cheat, but you all are smart and do not need to be told that he does.
Saturday's start against the Phillies was a rare klunker for deGrom. I say "klunker", because he gave up two runs and it also ended his 31 scoreless inning streak. A Nick Maton single and a sacrifice fly from Andrew McCutchen was the damage done against him. deGrom's ERA now sits at an "awful" 0.69 on the season, the best ERA for a starting pitcher through the month of June in the history of Major League Baseball. Aside from the number of innings Bob Gibson put up in the 1968 season, I believe we are witnessing the best season from a starting pitcher in history.
Jacob deGrom's Next Scheduled Start: Thursday, July 1st, At Atlanta Braves, 7:20 PM ET
Outing Outlook: Mercy! Here we go again with the Braves! Atlanta looks like they could not get enough of Jake in Flushing a week ago, so they will try their luck against him once more on their home field, not that it is going to make much of a difference where they play. I would take deGrom in Antarctica with below freezing temperatures against any team if need be, he is just that good. The deGrom vs. Freeman matchup will once again be exciting to watch, as it seems Freddie can make solid contact off of him at times. Again, deGrom seemed to struggle last time out against Philadelphia so I expect better results from him, not that allowing two runs in six innings is awful, but still.
deGrom's Opponent: Ian Anderson- LHP
Anderson enters Thursday's game with an ERA of 3.42 and a record of 5-4. The leftie is coming off of a start on Saturday June 26th, in which he allowed three runs over six innings, while striking out nine against the Reds. Anderson is one of the better young pitchers in the game, but can have his moments where he tends to struggle.
Ian Anderson's Current Stat Line: 5-4, 3.42 ERA, 1.17 WHIP
My Prediction: Round two of deGrom vs. Atlanta will be much of the same, except for no dumb seven inning doubleheader mixed in. The great right arm of deGrom will deliver once again and will continue his legendary journey to his third CY Young Award and in my opinion, his first NL MVP Award. I would not mind if he got all of the National League awards, because he hits just as good as Fernando Tatis Jr.!
My deGrom Prediction: Pitching Line: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 11 SO, 1 BB, W, 93 Pitches
My deGrom Prediction: Hitting Line: 1-3 with an RBI single
Final Thoughts: We are all witnessing the greatest season from a starting pitcher since Bob Gibson's 1968 season, I just wish deGrom logged more innings. Face it, we are not in the generation where pitchers go nine innings anymore, which I would love to see but will not unless they are going for a No-Hitter, Shutout, or something similar. Arguing Pedro Martinez's 2000 season was better up to this point is straight up foolish and is flat out silly, as he had a 2.51 ERA in the month of June during the 2000 season. The Braves better get in their prayer closets, because deGrom is knocking on their doorstep.
See you at the Ballpark!!!
Adam
