The deGrom Weekly Update: Week of June 20th

I have decided to start writing a weekly series simply titled "The deGrom Weekly Update". This will strictly be on Jacob deGrom and his historic season so far. Each post will include results of his previous outings, his current stat line, who he faces in the given week, and my predictions of how he will perform. I do not know how I have not thought of this idea before, but I want to be able to remember his historic season in some way. This is something that has to be typed out, so I am going to make it happen!

Note: I will always try to get these weekly updates out at the beginning of each week and obviously before Jake pitches so you all do not think I am somehow cheating with my predictions.

Being a potential two-start week for deGrom, I will be writing two outing predictions, which is double the fun!

All stats are through the week of June 13th

Jacob deGrom's Current 2021 Stat Line: GS 11, 6-2, 67 IP, 0.54 ERA, 0.50 WHIP, 111 SO, 8 BB, 724 ERA+

Current Jake News: Jacob deGrom continued his dominance on Wednesday, June 16th, firing three perfect innings against the Cubs in Flushing while striking out eight in the process. He was forced to leave the game after the third inning because of shoulder tightness. Thursday, the day after his outing, he had an MRI done on his right shoulder and it came back clean. Now deGrom turns his attention to the Braves on Monday in Game 1 of a 7 inning doubleheader. If all goes well in his start Monday, he will pitch later in the week against the Phillies over the weekend, also at Citi Field. deGrom threw a bullpen session on Saturday June 19th in Washington (which was also his 33rd birthday) and played catch on Sunday, June 20th before the game.

Jacob deGrom's Next Scheduled Start: Monday, June 21st vs. Atlanta Braves, 5:10 PM, ET.

Outing Outlook: deGrom and the Mets will welcome the Braves for a doubleheader on Monday, as well as a division series as a whole that will go through Wednesday. As a welcoming gift off the plane, the Braves will get to face deGrom, oh boy what a surprise!! In all seriousness, deGrom's health will be the key thing to watch. His performance and how well he will do, I really do not worry about, because, well, he is Jacob deGrom. An NL East matchup in the Big Apple never sounded so good! The deGrom vs. Freddie Freeman matchup will be fun to watch as Freeman is currently hitting .271 off Jake in his career.

deGrom's Opponent: Ian Anderson-LHP Being a doubleheader, this could depend on who Brian Snitker, the Braves manager wants to send out there for the first game. Through my research and calculating the "every fifth day" pattern (including off days), I believe it will either be Ian Anderson, the young pitcher for Atlanta, or the veteran Charlie Morton who would be on short rest. Morton is coming off a gem against the Cardinals on Thursday, pitching seven no-hit frames and taking his no-hit bid into the 8th. That being said, the pitching matchup does not really matter when deGrom is the one pitching on the other side, in all reality they have no chance.

Get to Know Jake's Opponent: Ian Anderson- Anderson is coming off a start against Boston on Wednesday, June 16th where the young lefty gave up four runs over his four innings of work. Looking to get back on track, Anderson will try his best efforts against the "deGrominator".

Ian Anderson's Current 2021 Stat Line: 4-3, 3.58 ERA, 1.22 WHIP

Opponent Breakdown: Anderson might as well hang it up before he gets going. Francisco Lindor looks to be heating up, finally, and the Mets bats should follow his lead. Please give Jake a few runs of support, because he will do the rest.

My Prediction: Ugh, the best right arm in the world will probably be on another pitch count. This is tough to predict because it is only a 7 inning game, but it could work in Jake's favor because of the aforementioned pitch count.

My deGrom Prediction: Pitching Line: 5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 9 SO, 1 BB, 68 Pitches, W

My deGrom Prediction: Batting Line: 1-2, with a single.

Jacob deGrom's (Potential) Next Scheduled Start: Saturday, June 26th vs. Philadelphia Phillies, 4:10 PM ET.

Outing Outlook: The Phillies will be in Flushing over the weekend and in the process will have to face the greatest pitcher of this generation or any generation for that matter. Jake will look to be on a normal workload by this point and will look to dominate as usual.

Side Note: As I am typing this portion of the post, it is currently Monday, June 21st and it is morning time. Again, I am using my best judgement on who will pitch for the opposing team as well as predict when deGrom will be taking the hill. The official MLB site still has TBD for the pitching matchups since it is so early in the week, so it is a little tough to predict, but I am determined to get it right by going off of the "every fifth day pattern" or whatever it is called Having a doubleheader on Monday as well as Friday, June 26th makes it hard to predict who the "Great deGrom" will face.

These dumb 7 inning doubleheaders make things way too confusing because you do not know if one game is going to be started by a spot starter or if the regular starters are going to pitch on short rest. Going in knowing this, I am going to use "the every fifth day pattern" just to make things easier on myself and you all who are reading this. The less confusion there is, the better. This being said, if my prediction is off on who he will pitch against or am off a day because of these doubleheaders, I apologize in advance. I try to do my absolute best and give the best reading and writing quality I can to make your time here worthwhile and not a complete waste of time. Now that I am done ranting, I will go on.

deGrom's Opponent For Saturday, June 26th: Zach Eflin- RHP

Get to Know Jake's Opponent: Zach Eflin- Eflin is coming off an awful start where he gave up six runs over five innings on Sunday, June 20th. I have no faith in Eflin and neither should anyone else who takes time out of their productive day to read my posts, which still blows my mind!

Zach Eflin's Current 2021 Stat Line: 2-6, 4.39 ERA. 1.27 WHIP

Opponent Breakdown: Not an impressive stat line from Eflin, but I will give it to him, he has more guts than I have, trying to get a win against deGrom. Just looking at deGrom on the other side of the field would make me not want to face him and as a result, I would "Go to the house", as my grandpa says. If I were Eflin, I would pack my bags and go back to the luxury hotel and watch the Phillies get carved up on SNY, the Mets TV network, and hear Gary Cohen the Mets lead commentator say "He struck him out!!!" over and over again.

My Prediction: Assuming deGrom starts Saturday and is on a normal workload, the only bats in the lineup who project to give him "trouble" would be Harper, Realmuto, and Hoskins. I say the word "trouble" simply to give a glimmer of hope to the Phillies offense. Joe Girardi, the Phillies manager better be on the edge of his seat in this one, he might learn a few things.

My deGrom Prediction: Pitching Line: 7 IP. 4 H, 1 ER, 12 SO, 1 BB, 89 Pitches, W

My deGrom Prediction: Batting Line: 1-3, with a single.

Final Thoughts: I hope all of the information made sense to you all, if it did not I do not blame you, I even got a little confused trying to predict when he was going to start for this upcoming weekend. The main point of these weekly updates is for me to write about the greatness of Jacob deGrom and to explain his legendary season to you all through my writing. The only thing I copy are the stats off of the official MLB site, I do not copy any news or headlines, I come up with all of that stuff myself and put it into my own words. I enjoy writing about deGrom, because he is the best pitcher I have ever seen perform, I hope you all feel the same way!

See you at the Ballpark!!!

Adam
