Spring Training Week 2 Recap: March 7th- March 13th

I will be highlighting specific games and player performances for the weekly period.


Sunday March 7th

Mariners vs. Angels

Top pitching prospect Logan Gilbert made his first spring start. Gilbert struck out four through two innings, while giving up one run.

Mike Trout went 1-2.


Royals vs. Padres

New Padre Yu Darvish pitched two scoreless innings for the Padres.

Trent Grisham hit his first home run of the spring.


Other Notable Player Performances From Sunday's Spring Games:

Matt Olson and Matt Chapman both homered for the A's.

Willson Contreras and Anthony Rizzo both homered for the Cubs.

Lucas Giolito pitched three scoreless innings for the White Sox.

Marlins Pablo Lopez pitched three scoreless innings.


Monday March 8th

A's vs. Royals

Royals top prospect Bobby Witt Jr. hit a 484 foot home run.

Whit Merrifield went 2-3.

Brady Singer pitched three innings of one run ball.


White Sox vs. Dodgers

Corey Seager went 2-3 and hit a 3-run homer.

Julio Urias pitched three scoreless innings.

Mookie Betts went 1-2.


Other Notable Player Performances From Monday's Spring Games:

Francisco Lindor went 2-3.

Indians Zach Plesac pitched three scoreless innings.

Javier Baez hit a three-run home run.

Anthony Rendon hit a home run.


Tuesday March 9th

Orioles vs. Twins

Trey Mancini went 1-3.

Twins Kenta Maeda pitched three scoreless innings.


Tigers vs. Yankees

Tigers prospect Riley Greene hit a double and drove in one.

Yankees Deivi Garcia pitched three scoreless innings, striking out five.

Gary Sanchez hit a home run.


White Sox vs Padres

Lance Lynn and Blake Snell faced off as they both started for their respective teams.

Lynn pitched 2.2 innings, allowing no runs, while walking four and striking out five.

Snell pitched two innings, allowing no runs and striking out one.

Andrew Vaughn went 1-3.


Rangers vs. Indians

Joey Gallo hit another home run.

Indians Aaron Civale pitched three innings of one run ball.


Other Notable Player Performances From Tuesday's Spring Games:

Pirates Ke'Bryan Hayes went 2-2, scoring 2 runs.

A's Matt Chapman hit his second home run of the spring.

Nationals Stephen Strasburg struck out four in his spring start.

Victor Robles hit a home run.

Christian Yelich hit a solo home run.

Trevor Story homered.


Wednesday March 10th

Cardinals vs. Nationals

Jack Flaherty and Max Scherzer faced off in one of the best pitching matchups this spring.

Scherzer was excellent. He pitched three scoreless innings, while striking out five and allowing no hits.

Flaherty pitched four innings, allowing two runs.


Braves vs. Red Sox

Max Fried pitched four innings giving up one run. Fried was feared to have had COVID-19, but was cleared.

Red Sox prospect Bobby Dalbec hit a grand slam.


Brewers vs. A's

Chris Bassitt pitched three innings of one run ball.

Josh Hader allowed three runs in relief. The top closer in baseball did not look like himself and struggled Wednesday.


Pirates vs. Yankees

Giancarlo Stanton hit his first home run of the spring, with an exit velocity of 115 MPH. If Stanton can stay healthy, he will be a force in the Yankees lineup.

Aaron Judge went 2-3.

Gleyber Torres went 1-3 with a home run.


D-Backs vs. Dodgers

Clayton Kershaw pitched three innings of one run ball.

Corey Seager hit a two-run home run, driving in Mookie Betts


Other Notable Player Performances From Wednesday's Spring Games:

Twins Jose Berrios pitched three scoreless innings and has looked sharp this spring.

Rays prospect Luis Patino pitched one scoreless inning.

Tigers prospect Matt Manning pitched 2 innings in relief, while giving up one run.

MacKenzie Gore pitched two innings, allowing two runs, while striking out four.


Thursday March 11th

Rays vs. Braves

Tyler Glasnow pitched 4 innings while striking out seven and allowing one run.

Ronald Acuna Jr. hit a home run, while going 2-3.


Yankees vs. Phillies

Gerrit Cole and Aaron Nola both made spring starts for their respective teams.

Cole pitched 3 innings, striking out five and allowing one run.

Nola pitched four innings, allowing two runs and striking out three.


Mariners vs. Dodgers

Corey Seager hit a two-run home run.

Trevor Bauer pitched 3.1 innings, striking out four and allowing one run.


Other Notable Player Performances From Thursday's Spring Games:

Red Sox Eduardo Rodrigurez struck out six in 4 innings.

Nationals Patrick Corbin pitched three scoreless innings.

Blue Jays George Springer hit his first spring home run, going 1-3.

A's Jesus Luzardo pitched four scoreless innings, striking out five.

Cubs Javier Baez hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning.

Indians Shane Bieber pitched three innings. He struck out five and gave up one run.

Mike Trout hit his first home run of the spring.

White Sox Eloy Jimenez hit a home run.

Mets Jacob deGrom struck out seven in three innings. One of the best Spring Training performances in recent memory, deGrom reached 102 MPH with his fastball.


Friday March 12th

Dodgers vs. Indians

Walker Buehler pitched three innings. Buehler gave up two runs, striking out four.

Corey Seager went 1-3.

Jose Ramirez went 1-3.

Max Muncy hit a solo home run.


Other Notable Player Performances From Friday's Games:

Phillies Zach Wheeler pitched four innings. He struck out three, while allowing two runs.

Marlins Pablo Lopez pitched four innings, giving up one run.

Fernando Tatis Jr. went 2-3 with a home run.

Chris Paddack pitched three innings, striking out one.

Lucas Giolito pitched four scoreless innings, striking out five.

White Sox Andrew Vaughn went 2-3.

Zac Gallen pitched 3.1 innings, striking out four and giving up no runs.

Reds Luis Castillo pitched two scoreless innings, striking out one.


Saturday March 13th

Tigers vs. Phillies

Casey Mize gave up six runs in 2.1 innings.

Bryce Harper hit a three-run home run off of Casey Mize in the 1st inning.

Andrew McCutchen went 2-3.


Pirates vs. Yankees

DJ LeMahieu went 2-3 with 3 RBI.

Gleyber Torres went 1-3.

Corey Kluber pitched four innings, giving up two runs.

Aroldis Chapman pitched a clean fifth inning, striking out one.


Angels vs. White Sox

White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson went 2-3.

Shohei Ohtani pitched 2.1 innings, giving up five runs.

Luis Robert went 2-4 with a home run.

Jose Abreu went 1-3.


Other Notable Player Performances From Saturday's Games:

Royals prospect Daniel Lynch pitched three innings, striking out five.

Fernando Tatis Jr. scored from third on a sacrifice fly hit to the shortstop.

Mariners prospect Julio Rodriguez went 1-3.

Brewers prospect Garrett Mitchell went 2-2 with a home run.


Final Thoughts: Personally, Thursday's games were the best of the week. deGrom, Cole, Bauer, and Bieber all made spring starts. Mike Trout also homered! I'm so excited for Opening Day on April 1st!
