MLB Week Three Regular Season Recap: April 18th- April 24th

I will be highlighting specific games and player performances for the weekly period, including the player of the week.


Sunday April 18th

Cleveland vs. Reds

Cleveland's Jose Ramirez hit a home run.

Shane Bieber pitched eight innings striking out 10 and giving up three runs, earning the victory.

Reds Tyler Naquin hit a home run.

Joey Votto went 2-4 driving in three.


White Sox vs. Reds- Game 1

White Sox Tim Anderson hit a solo home run.

Yasmani Grandal went 1-3 with an RBI.

Red Sox Kike Hernandez hit a home run.


Dodgers vs. Padres

Trevor Bauer and Blake Snell were in a pitching duel.

Bauer pitched six innings of one-run ball striking out seven.

Snell pitched five innings allowing two runs, also striking out seven.


Braves vs. Cubs

The Braves offense exploded, scoring six runs in the 1st inning off Kyle Hendricks.

Freddie Freeman hit his fifth home run of the season.

Travis D'Arnuad hit a two-run home run.

Guilermo Heredia went 3-4 driving in six, hitting a solo home run and a grand slam.

Cubs Anthony Rizzo homered twice.

Nationals Trea Turner homered twice.

Phillies Aaron Nola pitched a complete game shutout against the Cardinals.

Yankees Gerrit Cole struck out 10 over 6.1 innings in a loss to the Rays.

Marlins Pablo Lopez pitched six innings of one run ball, striking out nine.

Royals Salvador Perez hit a two-run home run.

Pirates Richard Rodriguez pitched two innings in relief, striking out two and picking up the win.

Mets Marcus Stroman pitched eight innings of one-run ball striking out five.


Monday April 19th

White Sox vs. Red Sox

White Sox Tim Anderson went 3-4 with two runs scored.

Luis Robert went 1-4 with an RBI.

Red Sox Kike Hernandez went 2-6 with a home run.

J.D. Martinez went 3-5 with a home run and two RBI.

Alex Verdugo went 3-4 with a home run.

Rafael Devers went 2-3 with an RBI.


Cardinals vs. Nationals

Cardinals Paul DeJong hit two home runs including a grand slam.

Tommy Edman hit a two-run home run.

Paul Goldschmidt went 3-5 with a home run and two RBI.

Justin Williams hit a home run.

Nationals Starlin Castro drove in two RBI.

Rays Kevin Kiermaier went 2-4 with two RBI.

Rangers Adolis Garcia went 2-4 with a home run.

Dodgers Corey Seager hit a two-run home run.

Brewers Brandon Woodruff pitched six innings of one-run ball while striking out seven and getting the win.



Tuesday April 20th

White Sox vs. Twins

White Sox Tim Anderson homered.

Jose Abreu homered twice going 3-4 with three RBI.

Yasmani Grandal hit a two-run home run.

Carlos Rodon pitched five innings of one-run ball getting the win.

Cleveland's Franmil Reyes went 3-4 with an RBI.


Orioles vs. Marlins

Orioles Trey Mancini homered.

Freddy Galvis homered.

Rio Ruiz went 2-4 with two RBI and one run scored.

Marlins Adam Duvall went 1-5 with two RBI.


Giants vs. Phillies

Giants Buster Posey homered twice.

Alex Dickerson hit a three-run home run.

Tommy La Stella hit a two-run home run.

Phillies Alec Bohm hit a two-run home run.

Rhys Hoskins homered.


Blue Jays vs. Red Sox

Blue Jays Bo Bichette homered.

Randal Grichuk homered.

Xander Bogaerts hit a three-run home run.



Other Notable Player Performances From Tuesday's Regular Season Games:

Dodgers Julio Urias pitched seven scoreless innings, striking out 11 and only allowing one hit and one walk.

A's Matt Olson hit a grand slam in game one of a seven inning doubleheader.

D-Backs Pavin Smith went 3-5 with two runs scored.

Cardinals Dylan Carlson hit a two-run triple.

Rays Brandon Lowe and Austin Meadows both homered against the Royals.

Angels Mike Trout homered.

Record: Brewers Corbin Burnes pitched six scoreless innings striking out ten and getting the win. Burnes set the MLB record for recording the most strikeouts without issuing one walk to begin a season.


Wednesday April 21st

Twins vs. A's

Twins Josh Donaldson hit a solo home run, driving in two total RBI's in the game.

Nelson Cruz homered twice, driving in three RBI in the game.

Byron Buxton went 3-6 with a two-run home run.

A's Matt Olson homered.

A combined 25 runs were scored in this game. The A's got the win 13-12.


Blue Jays vs. Red Sox

Blue Jays Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 2-3 with an RBI and one run scored.

Bo Bichette went 2-4 with an RBI and one run scored.

Red Sox Xander Bogaerts homered.


Mets vs. Cubs

Mets Francisco Lindor homered going 3-4 with two runs scored.

Pete Alonso hit a two-run home run.

J.D. Davis went 2-4 with an RBI.

Cubs Javier Baez hit a grand slam and scored three runs.

Anthony Rizzo scored three runs.

The Cubs offense came alive scoring 16 runs in the game.


Rays vs. Royals

Rays Brandon Lowe hit a two-run home run.

Joey Wendle went 2-4 with three RBI.

Austin Meadows went 2-3 with an RBI and a run.

Royals Jorge Soler homered going 3-4 with three runs scored.

Hunter Dozier hit a two-run home run.

Hanser Alberto hit a pinch hit two RBI double.


Other Notable Player Performances From Wednesday's Regular Season Games:

Braves Ian Anderson pitched 6.2 shutout innings getting the win against the Yankees.

Phillies Bryce Harper homered.

Marlins Trevor Rogers pitched seven innings. He struck out eight and earned the victory.

Angels Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani both hit solo homers.

Record: Nationals Max Scherzer passed Mike Mussina on the career strikeout list in a 1-0 win against the Cardinals. Scherzer is now 21st on the all-time strikeout list.


Thursday April 22nd

D-Backs vs. Reds

D-Backs David Peralta went 5-6 with a three-run home run driving in seven RBI. He came up a double short of the cycle.

Pavin Smith went 2-5 with an RBI and one run scored.

Carson Kelly hit a two-run home run.

Reds Jesse Winker went 2-4 with two home runs and three RBI.

Nick Castellanos went 2-6 with a home run and three RBI.

Joey Votto hit a solo home run.

Eugenio Suarez hit a two-run home run.

Reds rookie Jonathan India homered.


Pirates vs. Tigers

Pirates Erik Gonzales went 2-4 with two RBI.

Bryan Reynolds scored two runs.

Tigers Akil Baddoo went 2-4 with an RBI.

Tigers JaCoby Jones homered.


Mariners vs. Red Sox

Mariners Mitch Haniger hit a two-run home run and two runs scored.

Ty France had two RBI.

Red Sox Rafael Devers homered.


Other Notable Player Performances From Thursday's Regular Season's Games:

Yankees Gleyber Torres went 3-5 with an RBI and one run scored.

Mets Pete Alonso hit a two-run home run.

Alex Bregman went 3-4 with three RBI.

Astros Carlos Correa went 2-5 with three runs scored.

Astros Cristian Javier set a career high in strikeouts with nine in five innings. Javier ended up with the win.

Giants Aaron Sanchez pitched five scoreless innings only scattering three hits against the Marlins and getting the win.

Padres Trent Grisham homered.

Note: Angels Mike Trout left the game after getting hit in the elbow by Astros Cristian Javier.


Friday April 23rd

Brewers vs. Cubs

Kolten Wong and Billy McKinney hit back to back home runs in the 6th.

Anthony Rizzo went 2-4 with a solo home run and two RBI.

Javier Baez went 3-5 with a home run.

Jake Marisnick went 3-5 with five RBI and three runs scored.

Willson Contreras hit a three-run home run.

Kyle Hendricks pitched six solid innings while only giving up two runs and getting the win.

The Cubs scored 15 runs in the game.


Mariners vs, Red Sox

Mariners Kyle Seager went 2-4 with a two-run home run and four RBI.

Red Sox Xander Bogaerts hit a two-run home run.

J.D. Martinez hit a solo home run.


Blue Jays vs. Rays

Blue Jays Marcus Semien went 2-4 with a three-run home run.

Randal Grichuk hit a solo home run.

Rays Randy Arozarena went 2-4 with a two-run home run and three total RBI.


Rangers vs. White Sox

Rangers Nick Solak hit a solo home run.

Adolis Garcia went 2-5 with two home runs and four RBI.

White Sox Yoan Moncada went 3-4 with a solo home run and three RBI.

Yermin Mercedes went 4-4 with three RBI.


Marlins vs. Giants

Marlins Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered.

Jesus Aguilar hit a two-run home run.

Giants Mike Yastrzemski went 2-3 with a two-run home run

Wilmer Flores went 2-4 with an RBI and one run scored.


Other Notable Player Performances From Friday's Regular Season Games:

A's Ramon Laureano homered.

Yankees Giancarlo Stanton hit two solo homers.

Braves Ozzie Albies homered.

Twins J.A. Happ pitched 7.1 innings while only allowing one hit against the Pirates.

Reds Nick Castellanos homered.

Rockies Trevor Story homered.

Fernando Tatis Jr. homered twice off Dodgers Clayton Kershaw while covering one eye while rounding the bases giving Bauer a bit of karma.

Trevor Bauer closed one eye while pitching in Spring Training.

History is Made: Mets Jacob deGrom pitched a two-hitter against the Nationals striking out 15, lowering his ERA to 0.31 on the young season. deGrom's career ERA to this point is lower than Mets great Tom Seaver. deGrom's career ERA is currently 2.55 while Tom Seaver's is 2.57. deGrom is also the fastest pitcher in history to record the most strikeouts in four starts to begin a season with 50. deGrom has struck out 14 or more in three straight starts. He has a 50:3 K/BB ratio in 29 IP. He set a career high in strikeouts in Friday's game with 15. He needed 109 pitches to complete his stellar performance.


Saturday April 24th

Angels vs. Astros

Angels Albert Pujols homered.

Shohei Ohtani homered.

Astros Carlos Correa homered.

Yordan Alvarez went 2-4 with four RBI including a bases clearing triple.

Alex Bregman went 2-3 with a three-run home run and four runs scored.

Yuli Gurriel went 2-4 with two RBI and one run scored.

Michael Brantley went 3-3 with four runs scored.

The Astros exploded in this one, scoring 16 runs.


Yankees vs. Cleveland

Gerrit Cole and Shane Bieber faced off in a pitchers duel.

Cole pitched seven innings while only scattering three hits and one run. Cole also struck out 11 and ended up with the victory.

Aaron Hicks and Rougned Odor both hit solo home runs off Shane Bieber in the 5th inning.

Bieber also pitched seven innings while allowing two runs and striking out nine. Bieber took the loss.


Marlins vs. Giants

Marlins Pablo Lopez pitched six innings of one-run ball while only allowing two hits, one walk, while striking out seven.

Jon Berti went 1-3 with a solo home run and two RBI.

Jesus Aguilar hit a two-run home run.

Giants Kevin Gausman was more dominant than Lopez. Gausman pitched 8 innings while allowing two hits, one walk, and one run while striking out 11 and getting the win.


Padres vs. Dodgers

Padres Fernando Tatis Jr. homered twice off Trevor Bauer while covering one eye while rounding the bases giving Bauer a bit of karma. Trevor Bauer closed one eye while pitching in Spring Training.

Tatis Jr. is the first player in history to homer twice off two Cy Young Winners in two consecutive games.

Bauer pitched six innings while giving up three runs, two earned and striking out nine.

Dodgers Corey Seager went 2-5 with two RBI.


Other Notable Player Performances From Saturday's Regular Season Games:

Mariners Kyle Seager went 3-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Mariners Ty France went 3-4 with three RBI.

Brewers Josh Hader pitched a solid 9th, while only allowing one walk to secure his 4th save of the season.

Mets Michael Conforto homered.

A's Matt Olson went 2-4 with two RBI.

White Sox Dallas Keuchel pitched six innings of shutout ball.

Phillies Rhys Hoskins went 2-4 with two home runs, while driving in five RBI and scoring twice.

WOW Moment: Astros Kent Emmanuel relieved Jake Odorzzi in the 1st inning because of a forearm injury. Emmanuel went on to pitch 8.2 innings in relief while only giving up two runs and ended up getting the win.


Player of the Week: Jacob deGrom- New York Mets

Stats for the Week: 9 IP, SHO, 2 H, 15 SO. deGrom also went 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.


Final Thoughts: A week where the majority of pitchers dominated. From Jacob deGrom to Corbin Burnes, it is a pleasure to watch these types of pitchers take the mound every fifth day.
