Sweet Rips is owned by Andrew Sweet, who began the trading card business last year. After talking to Andrew and watching a few of his card breaks, I could tell that he was very serious about the trading card industry and hobby in general. Once I had the idea of writing the article, I tried to think of the best way that readers could understand the trading card industry even if they are not familiar with the business.

Q: What Made You Get Into the Business?

A: The reselling market in general has always interested me from a very young age. As the card market began to expand exponentially in 2020, I saw this as a business opportunity and I jumped right into the hobby as a "card breaker". What a card breaker does, in simplified terms, is buy boxes of sealed trading cards and sell those boxes utilizing live video software embedded in various social media platforms. When a customer purchases the box, the breaker opens the box in the live video chat and ships the cards pulled from the box to the customer afterwards. This hobby offers countless opportunities to expand and grow, which drew me in immediately and motivated me to become a card breaker.

Q: Why Do You Love the Hobby/Business?

A: The sports card industry is unlike any other hobby I have ever been a part of. While there is a significant draw to buying and selling the cards to make a profit, there is also a strong sentimental aspect to many cards in my own and other individual's collections. Whenever I open a pack and pull out a valuable or monumental card for my or another person's collection, that memory sticks with me for a very long time. This adrenaline rush alongside the joy that hitting big cards brings to my customers is something that I love about this hobby and keeps me motivated to work every day.

Q: Do You Plan On Doing This Long Term?

A: Upon graduation in the spring of 2022, I plan to expand my business and continue to follow the Lord's leading in this business.

A: My favorite aspect of this business is seeking out and negotiating deals on box prices with sellers. I love the art of negotiation and I pride myself in getting the best prices possible, which allows me to offer great deals to my customers.

A: All cards are typically shipped within 3 business days of the box being opened or break being run. My shipment team does an exceptional job protecting the cards that we ship by sleeving the cards in top loaders, placing them in team bags, placing those bags in bubble wrap, and extensively wrapping these card bundles in even more bubble wrap to ensure safe transit for all packages.

Q: What Products Do You Typically Open?

A: The main products that I open are produced by Panini America and the brands that are my best sellers are Prizm, Select, Optic, National Treasures, and Flawless of both NBA and NFL products.

Q: Do You Buy/Sell One Sport Or Multiple Sports?

A: I primarily buy and sell NBA and NFL products, but will explore other sports such as soccer and baseball as I grow in my business endeavors.

Q: What Is Your Ultimate Goal For Your Business?

A: My primary goal as a card breaker is to offer a family friendly, fun environment that individuals can join into, to both grow their knowledge of sports cards as well as purchase these cards at affordable pricing. I do my best to offer excellent value in every box or break that I initiate to offer the very best return possible for every customer that buys into a break. The thought of doing this type of entrepreneurial work full-time excites me and I hope to make that dream a reality sometime in the near future.
