Adam Dawson's 2022 Fantasy Football Preview: My Rankings and Predictions

Introduction: Welcome back, as I hope you all are doing well. The following is the first of my fantasy football articles for the 2022 NFL Season and boy am I excited! If you know me well, you know that I can never get enough of fantasy football no matter the league size (8,10,12) or format (redraft, keeper, and dynasty), as I seem to enjoy it all. When the season kicks off, I plan on writing weekly fantasy articles involving my fantasy predictions and reactions for each week, who is at the top of the waiver wire, etc. as I am pumped to start that series soon.

That being said, I have decided to share some of the things that I have learned over the past few months from doing research and doing a few (well, more than a few) mock drafts, as well as my real drafts. Nevertheless, I hope to have at least gained something from the pre-draft process.

Of course, I will be including my 2022 PPR (Points-Per-Reception) redraft rankings by position. Doing it by position seems a bit easier as I will also include my "Love" and "Hate" players by ADP (Average Draft Position) as well. To begin the article I will be answering some fantasy questions, then I will add in my aforementioned rankings at the end. Along the way, I will be giving my "Adam's Analysis" of why I ranked the players the way that I did. Most importantly, I hope you all enjoy reading my article, as this is one I enjoy putting together each season.

Who will be this year's breakout fantasy rookie?

This one seems to always be a popular question that gets asked pretty commonly. My answer to this question a week or so ago would have been an easy one in Commanders running back Brian Robinson, as his ADP (Average Draft Position) has been on the rise for the past several weeks. Unfortunately, Robinson was shot multiple times in the lower-body in an attempted car-jacking on Sunday, August 28th.

Already having him rostered in one of my leagues, I was at a loss for words when I heard the news from one of my friends via Facebook messenger. In my 10 years of playing fantasy football, I have never had one of my players get shot before, so this is for sure a first. As a result, I hope Robinson makes a full recovery and can play again this season. As of now, I have him stashed on my IR (Injured Reserve) hoping he can make an impact down the line.

Regarding the fantasy situation, I think Antonio Gibson was bailed out in a major way, simply because I did not see him being the Commanders RB1 and more like their RB3. Fumbling the ball multiple times combined with Robinson out-performing him in the preseason, as well as Washington's RB2, J.D. McKissic, Antonio's fantasy value was going down the drain. Gibby was even on the Commanders special teams unit in the preseason prior to Robinson's injury if that tells you anything. The Alabama rookie was simply one who I was targeting in the late rounds of drafts as this was a hard pill to swallow.

Still after the injury, Gibson only rose three slots in my running back rankings, as he goes from my RB28 to RB25 entering the 2022 campaign, as I feel his fumbling problems are still something to be aware of, as J.D. McKissic now will get a big uptick in snaps and overall playing time to begin the year. So with Robinson out of the picture, who do I think is this year's breakout rookie?

My answer somewhat confidently is running back Dameon Pierce of the Houston Texans. With that being said, I could have gone multiple ways here, as I could have chosen one of the millions of talented receivers in this year's draft class (Drake London, Chris Olave, Garrett Wilson, George Pickens, etc.) but I decided to go the running back route instead.

In choosing Pierce, I know he will most likely end up as the RB1 in Houston, as beating out Marlon Mack for the starting role should be an easy task. This should result in Pierce getting solid and consistent volume. Seeing Pierce as a flex play is now something I have been seeing more and more of, as he is no longer a value pick as his draft day price has gone up quite a bit.

Edit: As of August 30th, Marlon Mack was released from the Houston Texans, making Dameon Pierce the clear RB1 in Houston. As a result, Pierce is now my RB24, moving up eight slots in my RB rankings. His ADP is currently skyrocketing, as I think the majority of people are overreacting just a bit as I have seen some questionable trades on social media involving Pierce that have had me scratching my head.

Will Saquon Barkley have a bounce-back season?

Yes. My answer should have come out as more of a YES, but I have to keep my expectations somewhat low. Saquon's ADP is currently around 20, but you could grab him at the end of round two or at the beginning of round three if the draft falls that way. Grabbing him in round three could be a major steal if he is back to form this season. Barkley is my RB11 in PPR formats to begin the season, as I have given him a positive boost over the course of the last two months.

Saquon has low-end RB1 upside entering the season as I am hoping he regains his elite high-end fantasy RB1 status as the season goes along. As someone who drafted Barkley his rookie season in 2018, I hope he returns to being a fantasy beast this year!

Do I prefer Cam Akers or J.K. Dobbins?

Akers and Dobbins are both similar in that they are both coming off injuries. Dobbins may not even play Week 1, as veteran Mike Davis was picked up as an insurance policy while Akers meanwhile was said "good to go" by Rams head coach Sean McVay. Akers was not the same late last season, as it was a miracle he was even on the field after tearing his Achilles. Having the Florida State alum in two dynasty leagues, I am hoping the 23 year-old Akers can somewhat return to form as he has the ceiling to be the Rams true workhorse running back. Having Darrell Henderson Jr. in the mix is kind of a pain but I have a feeling Cam has the upper-hand in this backfield.

Dobbins meanwhile is in a run-heavy offense with quarterback Lamar Jackson at the helm. When healthy, I predict the former Ohio State running back will get his share of touches.

So, to answer the original question, I would prefer Akers over Dobbins because of the uncertainty of J.K,. although I do like both in dynasty formats with the advantage going to Akers.

Who is one player I faded in drafts?

Amari Cooper seems to be the player I am fading the most this season, as I feel there is better value for receivers around his draft range. Currently my WR33 in PPR formats, I am just not at all on the Cooper hype train. Avoiding him in drafts is somewhat simple because the receivers seem to go on forever. With Deshaun Watson out for the majority of the season, I do not have much faith in Jacoby Brissett as the Browns quarterback to consistently get Cooper the ball and see him consistently get volume week after week.

Another player that comes to mind would be Tyler Lockett of the Seattle Seahawks, as their current QB situation is a sticky one. That said, if leading receiver DK Metcalf falls to a reasonable round, there was no way I would pass up that value as he is a potential top 10 fantasy receiver, he just needs a QB not named Geno Smith throwing him the ball. Although, Metcalf did somewhat have chemistry with Smith in three games last season. (14 Rec, 197 yards, 3 TD) with former QB Russell Wilson on the shelf.

Both Lockett and Cooper and even Minnesota's Adam Thielen are who I consider to be "boring" picks, as these players are either aging or have the aforementioned awful QB situation.

Who is a good value in drafts?

Instead of going with one individual player, I have decided to go with the whole Green Bay Packers receiving core: Allen Lazard, rookies Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs, and even recently acquired veterans, Sammy Watkins and Randall Cobb who will most likely be on your league's waiver wire before the season begins headed into Week 1.

Davante Adams is no longer in Green Bay as he leaves behind a massive amount of targets from last season (169) that will now be split up between the receivers and their two main running backs, Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon.

With Aaron Rodgers coming off yet another MVP campaign, he will need to be finding these young pass-catchers all over the field during the upcoming season. Lazard in particular is one who I am loving at his current ADP as I feel like he could be a bargain for where he is being drafted at currently. All of the Packers receivers have fantastic value as you should not have to reach for them at all until the mid-to-later rounds of drafts.

Who are some players that I could not stop drafting?

Of course when you are in multiple fantasy leagues you tend to draft some of the same players. The following are players that I could not get enough of, as I made sure to target them in drafts. Therefore they are on the majority of my teams for this season.

Joe Burrow: QB- Cincinnati Bengals: Adding in Mr. Burrow as the lone QB only seems appropriate here as he is one of my favorite players and is also my favorite QB in the league. Sure, to get him in three leagues this year (including keeping him in a dynasty league) is something that I tend to get really excited about as I feel everyone has a few players they love and tend to reach for.

Burrow's value in ESPN drafts is insane, as you could get him in the mid to late rounds. Other sites such as Sleeper have his ADP in the 50's as that is a fifth to sixth round draft price that I am not willing to pay. That said, I hope Joey B can build off his amazing performance from last season, as I have a feeling this young Bengals offense is just getting started.

Travis Etienne: RB- Jacksonville Jaguars: I love to think of Etienne as a cheaper version of D'Andre Swift. Being ranked as the consensus RB17 in PPR formats, I would not be shocked if he was a top 12 RB or higher by season's end. Being in the same tier as Ezekiel Elliott, Cam Akers, David Montgomery, Breece Hall, etc. I would take Etienne over those other players mentioned in a heartbeat. A pass-catching back who should be awesome in PPR this season with his college buddy, QB Trevor Lawrence throwing him the ball out of the backfield, Etienne's situation could not get much better than that!

People tend to forget that Travis was a first-round pick in 2021 out of Clemson before suffering an injury that caused him to miss his rookie season last year. With James Robinson in the mix, I believe Etienne will get the majority of the work, as he is best viewed as a low-end RB2 with the upside for more.

Obviously if you invest in Etienne, be sure to get his handcuff, the aforementioned James Robinson in some way or fashion. In doing this, I feel a lot more comfortable owning Etienne all season long.

Justin Jefferson: WR- Minnesota Vikings: JJettas was my top choice if I drafted early on in drafts. Therefore, if he fell towards the backend of the first round, even better, as I have a feeling he will be the top pass-catcher in fantasy this season. Watching Jefferson do the griddy in the end zone this season is what I am hoping for.

DJ Moore: WR- Carolina Panthers: The receiver I targeted the most as my WR2. Moore or DJM is my overall WR12 for a reason. Having him ranked above Michael Pittman Jr. in my receiver rankings is no typo as the guy seems to be consistent year in and year out. With a bit of a QB boost in Baker Mayfield this season as opposed to Sam Darnold, expect Moore's TD number to go up as he finished with only four scores last season. His receiving yards could even go up a bit compared to last season (1157) as well.

Brandin Cooks: WR- Houston Texans: Cooks being the main source of offense for the Texans excites me, as he seems to be a very underrated player. BC outperforming his WR20 consensus projection is something I think he could do pretty easily with Houston having to throw a lot late in games. In Brandin's eight year career he has finished with at least 1000 receiving yards in six of those seasons.

Rashod Bateman: WR- Baltimore Ravens: Poised for a breakout season as Baltimore's WR1, let's just hope Lamar Jackson does not run every play and the second-year receiver should be fine. With tight end Mark Andrews as the only other real source for targets, I am buying into the Bateman hype this season.

Zach Ertz: TE- Arizona Cardinals: The only tight end on my list, I believe Ertz is a solid late-round choice at the position. Almost a given that he will finish as a top 10 TE, I have tried to be all over Ertz as much as I could, as I tend to wait on a TE until the later rounds in drafts. If Ertz was gone, I seemed to either like Pat Freiermuth or Dawson Knox as secondary options.

Adam's Fantasy Football Love and Hate List:

Much like fantasy football expert Matthew Berry, I have decided to list a few of my "Love" and "Hate" players based off of their ADP. To clarify, I would draft my "Hate" players if they dropped to a good value in drafts.

Adam's Love List:

Saquon Barkley: RB New York Giants- A potential top 5 RB and you could get him in round three. Those who are in leagues with me know that I am a "Barkley believer" as I seem to target him in the majority of drafts, as his upside is one of the highest in the game.

Chris Godwin: WR Tampa Bay Buccaneers- A past ACL injury has lowered his ADP quite a bit but he should be good for Week 1 in Dallas, although he could be on a snap count. Expect top 20 WR numbers with The GOAT or Tom Brady dotting him up when fully healthy.

A.J. Dillon: RB Green Bay Packers- Projected goal-line TD machine. With Davante Adams gone, Green Bay will be having to rely on their pair of running backs more than ever. Having great draft value opposed to lead-back Aaron Jones, getting Dillon multiple rounds later is an awesome investment as he slots in as a great RB3, flex play, or an even better bench RB depending on league size.

George Pickens WR: Pittsburgh Steelers: Pickens has seemed to be the rookie that everyone has fallen in love with recently in fantasy land. As a result, I have hopped on the Pickens bandwagon as well. The Steelers seems to produce receivers very well, as it seems they have been doing this since the days of Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes. Looking great in preseason action, I hope the 2021 National Champion out of Georgia can carry over his momentum to the regular season.

Adam's Hate List:

Christian McCaffrey: RB Carolina Panthers-CMC reminds me of glass. When you drop the aforementioned glass, it breaks into hundreds of pieces. Similarly, when McCaffrey is tackled or hits the ground, he will more than likely get hurt and will be carted off the field. CMC can be a league winner, but I am not taking the risk early in drafts. Give me a player like Justin Jefferson instead, as I love the RB value in rounds 2 and 3.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire: RB Kansas City Chiefs-Just a bit overrated for me in a crowded backfield. Watch out for rookie Isiah Pachero if anything happens to CEH.

Ezekiel Elliott: RB Dallas Cowboys- Tony Pollard is the more productive back in "Jerry Land" or whatever it is called in Dallas. We all know the fourth-year RB out of Memphis is more productive than the 2017 first-round selection out of Ohio State. Do not lie to yourself, as Cowboy fans should even know this by now.

Pollard rushed for 5.5 yards per attempt last season, while Zeke rushed for 4.2 as the stats for the most part back up my previous statements. Elliott seems to "just be a name" in fantasy resulting in his ADP being so high, as he has been on the decline for the past several seasons. Seeing Pollard having a "Deebo Samuel" type of role in Dallas's offense this season is likely, as I could see him line up in the slot as well. With injuries to James Washington, Michael Gallup, etc. I see Tony as one of the main players Dak Prescott targets this year. As a result, Pollard, a top three RB handcuff in the league, in my opinion (AJ Dillon, Tony Pollard, Kareem Hunt), should be taken in drafts accordingly.

Amari Cooper: WR Cleveland Browns- "Oh boy, another paragraph where Adam talks bad about Amari Cooper." My response: "Sure, I might as well."

Cooper enters the season in an awful QB situation and it is not his fault, as he was just put into this predicament. The only Browns players I like this year are Nick Chubb, Kareem Hunt, rookie receiver David Bell as a late-round flier, and tight end, David Njoku as I am loving his individual value.

Have mercy on the whole Browns receiving core for the first 11 games, as Jacoby Brissett is just not the answer in Cleveland and the season has not even started yet. Cooper at best is a WR3 or high-end flex play for me entering 2022. Maybe by the time Deshaun Watson returns after his 11 game suspension I can have a bit more faith in the former Alabama receiver.

Michael Thomas: WR New Orleans Saints- Injury prone, let MT be someone else's future headache. Considering new rookie out of Ohio State, Chris Olave is now in the mix and Alvin Kamara seems to be suspension free this season, MT is a big question mark heading into Week 1.

Amon-Ra St. Brown: WR Detroit Lions- DJ Chark may be the WR1 in Detroit's offense. Rookie receiver Jameson Williams out of Alabama projects to eat into St. Brown's volume as well when he returns from an ACL injury around November. Let us not forget about tight end, T.J. Hockenson either.

Adam's Bold Fantasy Football Predictions for 2022:

Trey Lance shows flashes of being a top fantasy QB for years to come.

Jonathan Taylor repeats as the RB1.

Javonte Williams finishes as a top five RB.

Justin Jefferson finishes as the WR1.

Mike Williams outscores Keenan Allen in the Chargers offense.

Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy both finish as top 20 WR.

George Pickens finishes as fantasy's top rookie receiver.

Irv Smith Jr. finishes as a top 12 TE.

Adam's 2022 Fantasy Football Redraft Rankings: My rankings are based off of the PPR scoring format. A player bolded represents a new tier.

Note: Defenses and Kickers will not be included as I tend to take the best available at the end of each draft.

Adam's Analysis: Quarterbacks

Josh Allen, Justin Herbert, and Patrick Mahomes are my top three QB's entering the season, as I believe they should be drafted in that order.

Matthew Stafford is my QB12 to begin the season as I would have loved to rank him a slot above Rodgers, but an elbow injury has prevented me from doing so. Stafford will play through it, as he has shown toughness throughout his NFL career.

Taking a QB in the first few rounds is something that I do not do unless their ADP is low, as I love stacking the running back and wide receiver positions for the first 8-10 rounds no matter the league size. Drafting a QB such as Rodgers or Stafford is just fine with me, as one of them could outscore a top ranked QB in a given week.

Adam's Analysis: Running Backs

The Najee Harris and Dalvin Cook draft debate gets blown way out of proportion. Having Harris ranked above Cook is a no-brainer for me, as we all know he has less mileage on him. Recent news of him dealing with a foot injury gives me hardly any concern. Although, Cook is a great pick if you can get his handcuff, Alexander Mattison in later rounds.

The Buffalo, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and New England backfields are all for the most part a mess. Although in dynasty formats I like Bills rookie James Cook out of Georgia (Dalvin's younger brother), as I was able to get a share of him and Devin Singletary in one of my aforementioned dynasty leagues.

Being able to lock up any backfield with multiple RB's who most likely will receive playing time is great because you can play one or the other in a given week or whoever has the hot hand.

Falcons rookie Tyler Allgeier out of BYU is a player I seem to be higher on that the majority of fantasy experts. With Cordarrelle Patterson projected as the RB1 in a below-average Falcons offense led by Marcus Mariota, I feel Allgeier could take this backfield over in short-order. Currently as the RB3 on the depth chart (also behind Damien Williams), he is a name to watch as the season goes along as I have him stashed on my bench already in a few leagues.

Leonard Fournette is my RB bust for the season. My reasoning behind this is simply because he may only receive 60-70 percent of the snaps/workload, as Giovani Bernard, Ke'Shawn Vaughn, and rookie Rachaad White look to eat into "Fat Lenny's" touches. This would result in keeping Fournette healthy for the whole season. That being said, give me Denver running back Javonte Williams any day of the week over the aforementioned Fournette as they are in the same ADP range. Leonard has dropped a bit in my RB rankings because of this as he is a player I am glad I did not get any shares of in my leagues this season.

New York Jets running back Breece Hall, the top rookie out of this year's draft class has all the talent in the world to be in the RB2 mix this season, but being in a timeshare with second-year back Michael Carter I think puts a cap on his draft value entering his rookie season. Hall is a guy I am all in on in dynasty formats as he should be the first player selected in first-year rookie drafts without question. When it comes to redraft leagues I like other guys around him a bit better (Travis Etienne, A.J. Dillon, David Montgomery, Cam Akers, etc.) Although, if you have good RB depth for the first month or so of the season around Hall, he is worth the pick for a late-season surge.

Adam's Analysis: Wide Receivers:

Ranking Terry McLaurin, Diontae Johnson, and Jaylen Waddle seemed to give me a headache all offseason, as I seemed to put them in a different order every other day. Finally, I decided to go with McLaurin, Johnson, and finally Waddle in that order.

Gabriel Davis, Rashod Bateman, and Darnell Mooney are receivers that I liked to target in the middle rounds as I think they all have the potential to outperform or stay right around their ADP.

Gabe Davis having the best fantasy and real-life QB in Josh Allen helps his case as he is the clear WR2 in Buffalo's offense behind Stefon Diggs.

Bateman and Mooney seem to be back-to-back in my rankings as choosing between them is almost like flipping a coin. Mooney seems to have the safer floor while Bateman seems to have the higher ceiling, it is just whatever you are feeling between the two.

Do not let "Hollywood" Marquise Brown fool you. Brown may put up WR1 numbers in the first six weeks while leading receiver DeAndre Hopkins is suspended. After those six weeks are up, I expect his numbers to drop a bit, as I avoided him in drafts. Instead of trying to trade him early in the year, I would rather go with a different pass-catcher instead who will be more consistent for the whole 17 game season.

Tight End:

Irv Smith Jr.: MIN

Albert Okwuegbunam: DEN

Hunter Henry: NE

Noah Fant: SEA

Adam's TE Sleeper: Irv Smith Jr.: Minnesota Vikings

Adam's TE Bust: Mike Gesicki: Miami Dolphins

Adam's Analysis: Tight Ends

Travis Kelce is going to have a career year as this is probably an obvious statement. Having Kelce ranked as the top TE was an easy choice for me as any other player ranked first at the position is just plain wrong. No more Tyreek Hill in KC means that Kelce will go to the moon this year.

Cole Kmet and Irv Smith Jr. are the two main sleepers for me at the position. Both seem to be a comfortable TE2 in all formats, as Kmet is on the fringe of being a low-end TE1.

Mike Gesicki I project will be more of a "blocking" tight end this year as adding Tyreek Hill to Miami's depth chart does not help matters.

Final Thoughts: At the end of the day, I am just another guy who happens to love fantasy football, it is as simple as that. Considering myself fortunate to begin my fantasy football journey at 11 years old is an understatement, as I have no idea what else I would be doing as a hobby as it seems I have grown up with it. As I always say, "If I did not enjoy playing, I would have quit long before now."

Nevertheless, if you made it to the end of the article, THANK YOU for reading what might have seemed like an hour of a 20 year-old ramble on and on about his predictions for the upcoming fantasy season. Words cannot express how much I love doing this out of enjoyment as well as sharing my thoughts with those who take the time to read it. Feel free to ask any fantasy related questions at anytime as I love talking fantasy football with just about anyone. Now, let the games begin!

See you on the Gridiron,

Adam
