Introduction: Welcome back, I hope you all are doing well! Free agency is underway and that means players will be going to and from teams in bunches specifically over the next few days. With this in mind I decided to give my thoughts on the Jaylen Brown trade saga that has gone on for way too long and has honestly gotten more ridiculous by the day. From the Giannis rumors to Brown being frustrated with the franchise, below are more of my honest opinions on the topic than anything else. More importantly I hope you all enjoy reading my short but direct article on this whole mess.
So this is a topic I did not want to write about... at all. Waking up everyday to new Jaylen Brown trade rumors is not something that I enjoy, friends of mine have even reached out to me to get my initial thoughts on the whole deal. After thinking about the topic, I decided to write about it in some capacity considering that these trade talks will not go away.
Jaylen Brown the 2024 Finals MVP, two-time All-NBA forward for the Celtics has been in trade rumors for more than just this year. In fact the five-time All-Star has been in the rumor mill for practically all of his career. Despite never requesting a trade to leave Boston it has always seemed that Brown, not Jayson Tatum has been in trade talks more often than not.
This offseason though the talks have been more real than ever. Coming off the heels of his best season in the league averaging 28.7 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 5.1 APG, all while shooting 47.7 percent from the field on a Jayson Tatum-less team for the majority of the season. Brown led the Celtics last season to 56 wins. So as a thank you he gets thrown into the trade market... which makes no sense to me whatsoever specifically after the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade that sent him to South Beach just over a week ago.
Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Bucks franchise, had been frustrated with Milwaukee for quite some time now and has wanted to leave the team for the past few seasons. From not showing up to practices and team meetings to voicing his frustrations to the media and sitting out games, the Greek Freak was doing things on his own time. This led to rumors and talks that went on for awhile that included the Celtics and multiple other teams. Believe me when I type that I was so happy when I received the notification that Giannis had been traded to Miami instead of Boston. Personally I believe Milwaukee was asking for way too much in exchange for Giannis, in my opinion over-valuing him when you factor in his age, durability, etc. Trading for Giannis would have meant that Boston not only would have had to give up multiple first-round picks, but then likely add in Baylor Scheierman and Hugo Gonzalez. When I saw this proposed offer I shook my head in disbelief and was thankful this did not occur. In turn Pat Riley made another big splash in bringing in another big player for the Heat similar to Shaq, LeBron, and more recently Jimmy Butler.
With the Giannis stuff out of the way I truly do not see a trade package that I like in return for a top 15-20 player in the league. At this point Boston is better keeping JB, the league as a whole I believe is under-valuing one of the best players in the Association. No wonder Jaylen is frustrated, I would be too.
Good grief I mean we have had proposed packages after proposed packages of potential Jaylen Brown deals. At this point all the rumors are swirling around in my head. Below are some trades I have seen rumored over the last few days to the last couple of weeks. Granted some of these offers are not spot on, although you get a good idea of what other teams want for one of Boston's best players over the last decade. Keep in mind Boston has reportedly wanted up to four first-round picks for Jaylen Brown.
Rumored Trades for Jaylen Brown:
Cleveland Cavaliers- Evan Mobley for Jaylen Brown.
Denver Nuggets-Jamal Murray and Cameron Johnson for Jaylen Brown and Sam Hauser.
New Orleans Pelicans- Trey Murphy and picks for Jaylen Brown.
Portland Trail Blazers- Jrue Holiday, Scoot Henderson, Shaedon Sharpe, and picks for Brown (I do not think they want to include center Donovan Clingan.)
Personally I am out on all of these deals, not having to think twice about it. Boston has mentioned they want four first-round picks for their superstar and by the looks of it trade offers get less and less intriguing by the day. Anywhere from 8-10 teams are interested in the Boston forward.
From the very beginning of the offseason I have always stuck to the idea that Boston makes small changes around the edges to improve the roster. Spending the MLE (Mid-Level Exception) on a center like Mitchell Robinson or a guard like Anfernee Simons or Collin Sexton is something that I am in all favor of doing. Missing out on Robert Williams III did hurt a little bit though, re-signing with the Trail Blazers.
Edit: Mitchell Robinson has signed with Boston on a three-year 47.4 million dollar deal with the third year being a player option. This gives the Celtics more front court depth that includes Neemias Queta and Luka Garza. My initial thoughts on this is that it is a great pickup by Brad Stevens and company, making a big splash in free agency. Using the MLE, Mitch was the best center left on the free agency market. Robinson is one of the best offensive and overall rebounders in the league, averaging 8 RPG last season. He is also a solid screen-setter. He hustles on both ends of the floor and is good defensively too using his big frame to his advantage. Still I would assume Queta will be the starting center with the former Knick coming off the bench and playing near 20 minutes per game.

Getting back to the Jaylen Brown trade talks, on the other end of the spectrum you also have to think of Jayson Tatum's prime. Yes, the one and only Jayson Christopher Tatum will be 28 years of age when the 2025-26 season starts. Breaking up this duo that has won time and time again over the past decade would hurt not only the fanbase but also Tatum himself and his chances of success for the rest of his career. JT has remained quiet throughout this whole process, not having said hardly anything at all about his running-mate in trade talks.
Final Thoughts: Coming into this I did not want to write some massive long article on this topic because in all honesty it hurts me to think about. As a fan I do not want to see any trade involve Jaylen Brown, this whole thing has been blown way out of proportion. The national media makes it even worse, the majority of them disliking Jaylen.
Being more frustrated with the Boston front office is where I am at currently. At this point trading for a big front-court piece has come and gone with Giannis off the table and I do not like the idea of trading for younger players and possible picks because the chemistry of the team would be off and you do not know how quick these young guys would develop. Simply put keeping Jaylen Brown is the best answer to ending this trade talk as Boston should look to mend their relationship with him instead.
See you on the Parquet
Adam
